From the age of about 13 onwards, I’ve suffered from higher-than-seems-normal levels of stress and anxiety, and while I’ve mostly come to terms with being jittery and a bit doomy, I certainly wouldn’t mind being less so. I’ve had counselling prior to, and it does assist.

And pulling back from my own (relatively low-key) problems for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the psychological health issues intensifying amongst under-30s? With cuts to psychological health services truly starting to bite, digitised treatment could be simply the ticket for young people who already filter almost every element of their lives– good friends, work, sex, home entertainment– through a screen.

Not everyone is totally encouraged that moving mental health care online is the method forward. “For me, what works in treatment is when you satisfy someone face-to-face, in the exact same room,” says London-based psychotherapist Sandra Tapie. “You learn more about not only what it resembles to speak to the person, but how it feels to be in a room with them. Using Skype is the next best thing: it’s ‘sufficient’, but it does not create the closeness, the intimacy, that truly gets people to open up and check out things.”.

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” says London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘practical equivalent’ of conventional counselling; it’s just not quite the very same thing. It’s truly essential that individuals who take part in it know that it’s a different experience from remaining in the space with somebody, speaking in person.” Better Help Hiring
